What does the Quartier Nord need? Housing? Offices? Shops?
The district is undergoing a major transformation, without seeming to be able to find a way of reconciling all its residents. Radio OhKaai wanted to find out more by inviting Martin Rosenfeld (IEB) and Benjamin Delori (BRAL) to its studios. Babek, a local shopkeeper, and Antoine de Borman (Perspective.brussels) will then have their say.
Finally, as we do every month between now and the big parade, we'll be returning to Zinneke's offices to follow the preparations for the Zinneke Parade, which is gradually being put together and organised.
Enjoy !
We take advantage of the beautiful August days to take a stroll through the neighborhood's history, its towers, and successive urban policies. Enjoy the walk!
This month we followed the Joyeuse Sortie organised by Zinneke and Park Poetik. In a radiant Sunday sun, we met the inhabitants of Forest, saw the Petite ceinture blocked by a giant mechanical wolf, danced with a brass band on the Place du Jeu de Balle and ended with a dip in the baths of Sainte Catherine. Enjoy the walk!
Screening followed by a creative workshop for children on the theme of the film: ‘dia de los muertos’.
Residents can come and drop off unused clothes and objects, and use what has been left by other people.
Radio OhKaai is the radio station for Brussels' Northern Quarter, hosted by its southern cousin, Radio Campus, and can be found at www.radioohkaai.be.
This month, we turned our microphone on after one of the film screenings at the Pôle Nord sports and cultural centre. In between coffees and biscuits, local residents chatted about everything from American civil rights to Japanese auteur cinema.
This month, Radio OhKaai accepted the invitation from Zinneke, which hosts the northern district radio station at number 13, Place Masui.
With winter approaching and the Zinneke Parade still a long way off, the Zinneke team wanted to get the festive fun underway on 10 November. "Pleasure/Plezier" will be the theme of the Zinneke Parade on 1 June 2024!
While we waited for the floats to arrive, Radio OhKaai got in touch with the Zinneke team and took a look at the evening's programme, which includes a concert, open mic, talk, costume workshop and even a kicker hidden in the basement of the labyrinthine Zinneke building.
We often talk a lot about urban planning, social and environmental issues when it comes to the part of Brussels that borders the canal. But let's not forget about cultural affairs.
This month, Radio OhKaai met Sarah Vanagt, the one behind the double exhibition Les Porteurs / Les Modèles, which you may have seen at Kanal in January. Don't worry if you missed it, Sarah and the young people from Brussels who worked with her will be tell you all about the genesis and production of the project(s). We also took the opportunity to find out more about the building work from Jean-François Leconte, Kanal's Secretary General.
At the end, discover the first capsule devoted to the final months of preparations for the Zinneke Parade.
Enjoy the show, and see you soon in the North District !
Radio OhKaai went along to the latest CoQ (Neighbourhood Committee) meeting in the Northern Quarter to bring you the speeches and reports from the various associations that keep everything alive between the Gare du Nord and Canal quays. Everything? Not really, as you'll hear from one angry resident.
Then, we'll return to the Zinneke Parade, accompanied by the clatter of the sewing machines of the Zinnode Party Nord volunteers.
Enjoy !
The residents of the Quartier Nord have a lot to say, and just what they need is a radio station where they can express themselves freely: Radio OhKaai!
Hear stories of the past, observations of the present and fears for the future. Join us in the Habitat et Rénovation offices, right in the heart of the Foyer Laekenois.
And as always, until the parade on 1 June, we're taking you behind the scenes of the Zinneke Parade. This time, we took the microphone at the presentation of the zinnodes at the end of March at the Zinneke offices on Place Masui.
This summer, the City of Brussels organised a travelling exhibition to celebrate three decades of 'Contrat de quartier', urban renewal initiatives aimed at revitalising certain districts and/or thoroughfares in Brussels.
To mark the occasion, we caught up with some of the local residents around Place Bockstael on a sunny Sunday. You can also read the interview with Arnaud Pinxteren (alderman for Early Childhood, Citizen Participation and Urban Renewal at the City of Brussels) and François Lefebvre (head of the Brussels Participation department) to find out more about the various municipal urban renewal and citizen participation initiatives.
Radio OhKaai is the radio station for Brussels' Northern Quarter, between the North Station and the canal banks. But what is the history of this canal, this Senne that cuts Brussels in two? What does it mean to the people of Brussels, and what do they have to say about it? Listen to the enlightening testimonies of Benjamin Delori (BRAL), Martin Rosenfeld and Charlotte Tiberghien (IEB) as well as those of local residents, met in the Parc de la Senne, on the old route of the river.
At the end of the programme, just a few days before the start of the festivities, we bring you the last of our behind-the-scenes capsules on the Zinneke Parade. Rendezvous at the soumonce in Ixelles for a dress rehearsal that makes us all the more impatient for 1 June!

Radio OhKaai is the radio station from the north of Brussels, invited by Radio Campus to broadcast in the friendly airwaves of the south of the city. Stop by every fourth Saturday of the month and get to know a neighbourhood that lives, survives and has things to say!
From September 2024, Molenbeek will officially enter the competition to become European Cultural Capital 2030. Representing the entire city of Brussels (already chosen in 2000), the municipality is launching its bid with a brand new festival, Molenfest, to be held throughout Molenbeek from 12 to 24 September. More information on https://molenbeekforbrussels2030.eu/
As part of the event, Radio OhKaai teamed up with Citizen Motion to offer a radio training course to a number of young Brussels residents. These neo-reporters criss-crossed the commune (and beyond!) to find out what people thought about this still little-known bid, which seems to be catching the public's imagination.
A big thank you and well done to Charlie, Mohammed, Rebecca and Tien for their commitment in this episode. You can also catch us on 14 September at the Place Communale in Molenbeek for a live broadcast, again as part of Molenfest.

Like so many other sectors, housing seems to be subject to the rules of a capitalist society. It's true that there seems to be a supply of luxury homes, but what about the people who live there? How can residential, industrial and even cultural spaces be made to coexist?
To answer these questions, we interviewed Martin Rosenfeld from Inter Environnement Bruxelles and Benjamin Delori from Bral. This interview, published here in its extended version, was part of the programme Logement ou pas logement, telle est la question broadcast on Radio Campus on 27 February 2024 and can be found HERE.
As part of the workshops organised in partnership with Citizen Motion and Molenfest, young neo-reporters Charlie and Mohammed went to meet some of the players based in Molenbeek.
